the little school philosophy

Our program is designed to help develop the whole child, socially,
intellectually, emotionally, and physically.  We encourage the child to
develop curiosity, imagination and independence.  We want them to love and value learning, play cooperatively and build friendships.

Play-based Curriculum and Theme Teaching

We are firm believers that children learn through doing.  Thus it is important to keep them busy throughout the day.  Our classroom is organized around centers.  Below is a selection of centers that will be available to the children.

Theme teaching is also part of our curriculum.  This entails finding a
subject which is of interest to the children (for example:  dinosaurs) and weaving this throughout the different centers.  For instance, at the art area, we may offer dinosaur sponges to paint with, or ask them to mix dinosaur colors.  At the listening center and book area, a selection of dinosaur books would be available from which listen or read .  At circle time, we would discuss the different types of dinosaurs and find a poem or song to sing.  Thematic units may change weekly or monthly depending on the interest level of the children.

Centers

Book Area/Quiet Corner--This is where
children can relax and gather their thoughts, look at stimulating books or share books with friends.

Play/Dress-Up Area -- This is where children can role-play and be immersed in creative and dramatic play.

Block Area -- It is important that children can manipulate large blocks.  They love to build roads, buildings, cities, etc.  It helps them use their imagination and large and small motor-skills along with hand-eye coordination.

Aural/Listening Center -- Children can listen to stories and music on tape.

Writing Area -- At this stage, children are "writing" in many different stages.  They have emergent writing skills which include scribbling, drawing, and letters.

Art Area -- Children will have the opportunity to color, paint, and work with all different types of art materials and mediums including but not limited to:  paste, glue, sequins, stickers, pens, pencils, paper, scissors.  Play dough will also be available.

Gardening Area -- We have a wonderful space set up for the children to discover and tend to both vegetable and plants.

Cooking -- Children love to help mix and measure!  What a better way than to have cooking and baking!
